Beryllium

Beryllium is an effective structural and functional material.

 JSC "Kompozit" for over 40 years has a division specializing in production of beryllium for various areas of technology. The production base has the equipment and technological processes for precise machining, welding, soldering, dimensional chemical processing, heat treatment, precision castings.

 The main directions of application of beryllium products.

 Space technology: instrument platforms, body space mirrors, mountings of various equipment, trusses made of pipes, parts of space navigation systems, heat stabilizers, details of travel drives, etc.

The instrument technique: X-ray windows (in the form of flat disks, rectangles, cylindrical and hemispherical, without flanges, with flanges made of steel, copper), cameras with multiple windows from beryllium, the details of precision instruments, details of shakers, etc.

Equipment for Nuclear Research: blocks of reflectors for research reactors, components for the withdrawal of the particle beams in accelerators.

During the period from 1989 by nowadays JSC “Kompozit” successfully fulfilled more than 35 export contracts for the supply of products from beryllium materials by orders of the biggest companies of China (bodies of mirrors, mountings for tools and devices), Israel (mountings for tools and devices), France (the elements of research facilities), Germany (units for research reactor), Switzerland (lengthy pipes for LHCb experiment at CERN), USA (X-ray windows).

We can offer various forms of cooperation, including:

-Production and delivery of products according to customer"s drawings,

-Labor-intensive pre-processing operations at Russian enterprises, and finishing by the customer or its partners,

-Joint development of new areas of beryllium materials,

-Joint ventures.

High-modulus beryllium constructions

They are flat assemblies such as frames, platforms, high-precision tubular assemblies with end elements from aluminum or titanium alloys, as well as covers in the form of rotation bodies.

Thanks to high modulus of elasticity in combination with low density, beryllium has an excellent specific rigidity: E/ρ =163.5 MPa×m3/kg, that by 6.6 times greater than aluminum and titanium, and by 6.1 times greater, than steel.

This gives the following advantages:

  • Increase by 2 - 3 times the positioning accuracy of measuring and data devices mounted on platform type members;
  • Increase by 50 - 100 % the rigidity of tubular truss designs working in the conditions of static compression (stretching) or external pressure;
  • Decrease by 30 - 40 % the weight of designs.

Delivery terms:

    1. Designs are supplied in heat-treated condition.
    2. Surface of structures is protected by chemical passivating coating.

Beryllium for space optics

Purpose: Improvement of parameters of space optical telescopes.

Application:

  • telescope mirrors,
  • telescope housings,
  • mirror-to-housing attachment assemblies.

Application of beryllium and its alloys having the highest, among metals, specific modulus of elasticity and heat capacity ensures dimensional stability of telescope elements for long-term service in space and decrease in weight of assemblies by 50-150 %.

Beryllium heat exchangers and heat stabilisers

Beryllium heat exchangers and passive heat stabilisers are the details of various configuration that meet the geometry of particular devices, tubular, flat, multilayered, including with internal cavities, massive blocks.

Beryllium is a unique combination of heat capacity and heat conductivity. Specific heat capacity of beryllium is twice as high as that for aluminum and thrice as high as that for steel. When using beryllium, operating temperature of devices is stabilized, accuracy of indications is raised and service life of measuring devices in extreme temperature conditions is increased.

Delivery terms:

  1. Assemblies are supplied in heat-treated condition.
  2. Surface of assemblies is protected by chemical passivating coating.

Precise beryllium driving units

They represent gears, turntables, housing parts and assemblies, mounting brackets of assemblies, covers in the form of rotation bodies.

Beryllium has a number of properties that meet to rigid requirements of high-precision servo systems and driving units (high modulus of elasticity, low density, high specific strength and dimensional stability).

Thanks to high modulus of elasticity in combination with low density, beryllium has an excellent specific rigidity: Е/ ρ= 163,5 MPa×m3 /kg, that by 6.6 times greater than aluminum and titanium, and by 6.1 times greater, than steel.

This gives the following advantages:

  • Increase by 1.5-2 times the positioning accuracy;
  • Reduction by 30-40 % the inertial loads;
  • Shortening of idle time after the end of movement.

  2. Non-working surfaces of assemblies and details are protected by chemical passivating coating.
